The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) is pleased to present well-known lecturer and author Eric Jay Dolan, who will be discussing his newest book, “Fur, Fortune, and Empire: The Epic History of the Fur Trade in America,” on Saturday, July 24, in the Whaling Museum, 13 Broad Street, 3 PM. Free for NHA members, or with museum admission.
An NHA Verney Fellow in 2005, Dolin studied environmental policy at Yale University, where he received his master’s, and holds a Ph.D. from MIT. He has written extensively on the marine world, and is the author of the award-winning book, Leviathan: The History of Whaling in America, which was chosen by the Los Angeles Times and the Boston Globe as one of the best books of the year.
In Fur, Fortune, and Empire: The Epic History of the Fur Trade in America, Dolan chronicles the rise and fall of the fur trade of old, when the rallying cry was “Get furs while they last.” The precious pelts of beaver, sea otter, and buffalo were tailored into extravagant hats, coats, and sleigh blankets. Dolan shows how fur became inextricably linked to many key events in American history, including the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.
